Understanding childcare quality ratings in Australia

A parent-friendly overview of Australian childcare quality ratings and how to read them alongside local feedback.

What the ratings cover

Australian childcare services are assessed against quality areas including educational program, health and safety, physical environment, staffing, relationships, partnerships with families and governance.

The overall rating helps families compare services at a high level, but the individual quality areas can be more useful when you have a specific concern.

Why timing matters

Ratings are not always updated in real time. A service can improve after an older assessment, and a recent staffing or leadership change may not be visible in public data yet.

This is why FirstNest shows the official layer separately and encourages families to look for current, moderated community signals.

How to use ratings on a tour

If a centre has an Exceeding rating, ask what practices they are most proud of. If a centre has a Working Towards rating, ask what has changed and what improvement plan is underway.

A transparent answer often tells you more than the rating alone.
